Jalandhar MP Santokh Chaudhary in the dock, as name crops up in fund embezzlement audio

Jalandhar: Young and dynamic Punjab Congress leader Damanvir Phillaur has asked local Congress MP from Jalandhar, Santokh Singh Chaudhary to ask for a CBI probe into a 'viral audio', which shows how corruption is being promoted and patronized in Jalandhar and particularly Phillaur's Panchayati Raj Institutions. The MP's name has also cropped up during the discussion between Phillaur's Panchayati Raj Secretary and a former Sarpanch of a village in the Phillaur tehsil. “If Santokh Singh Chaudhary thinks that he has no role in the corrupt practices clearly mentioned in the viral telephonic talk, then he should write to the Centre for a CBI probe,” said Phillaur while addressing media persons in Phillaur today.

Punjab Congress leader Damanvir Phillaur asks for a CBI probe

Phillaur said that he along with the people of Phillaur constituency will join Santokh Singh Chaudhary if he wants us to accompany him to Delhi and demand a CBI probe. “Corruption has eaten into the vitals of Phillaur. Funds meant for development are being embezzled. There is zero development in villages and other areas of Phillaur. The reason is simple – money meant for development is being pocketed by corrupt politicians and officers,” he added.

Expressing his dismay over the behaviour of the local MP, Phillaur said that the vision of Congress party and Rahul Gandhi is to undertake people’s service in a selfless manner, and not to loot the people’s money. “Whatever is being done in Phillaur is against the ethics of Congress as a party," asked Phillaur.

The Congress leader said that he even wrote to the DC regarding the embezzlement of funds but the local MP used his clout to suppress the matter. Chaudhary does not allow the officials to entertain RTI questions too, informed Phillaur, who is a respected political figure of Phillaur and is also the founder of Phillaur People’s Forum (PPF).

Phillaur said that he will even request Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi to look into the matter as he has already spoken about zero tolerance towards corruption. “People of Phillaur are looking towards Chief Minister Channi with great hope. He must act against corruption being patronized by party MPs and MLAs,” he said.

Phillaur bemoaned that the past four and a half years have been the worst for Phillaur as it has plummeted to a historic low  in almost all aspects of governance. No one is safe. Illegal mining is rampant. Drug overdose deaths are being reported but are shown as suicide cases by police. Women are not safe. Police themselves humiliate women. Murders and thefts are not being solved. There is no development in Phillaur. Nothing good has been done in schools, villages as per people’s aspirations, he said.
